Vortrag "Race as Risk? ‘Race’ and ‘ethnicity’ in medical research and clinical practice in India" - Sandra Bärnreuther

17.04.2018, 18:30 Uhr
Iwalewahaus

So-called racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care have become important research areas in reproductive medicine. This presentation engages with medical research that explores possible correlations of ‘race’ or ‘ethnicity’ with the outcome of the use of assisted reproductive technologies. It pays particular attention to scientific studies on ovarian aging in ‘Indian’ women.

Relying on a close reading of publications in the field of reproductive medicine, the paper interrogates epistemological foundations of medical discourses on race and ethnicity. What conditions made this strand of medical research possible? How are racial and ethnic disparities investigated and explained? And how are they described to materialize in the field of assisted reproduction? In a second step, the presentation explores how scientific results of racial and ethnic disparities in ovarian aging come to matter in clinical practice in India, based on long-term ethnographic research in In Vitro Fertilization hospitals in Delhi. How do doctors relate to research outcomes that postulate disparities? How do these results alter clinical practice? And what does it mean for users of assisted reproductive technologies when race is turned into risk?
