Jan Hutta hat ethnographische und partizipative Forschungen in Rio de Janeiro und Berlin durchgeführt und arbeitete von 2010 bis 2012 für das aktivistische Forschungsprojekt "Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide". Er ist Gründungsmitglied von s u b \ u r b a n - zeitschrift für kritische stadtforschung.

Er promovierte an der Open University in Milton Keynes, Großbritannien. Seine Forschung beschäftigte sich mit der Herausbildung räumlich vermittelter Formen von Citizenship im Zusammenhang mit Alltagserfahrungen queerer Menschen und Politiken der LGBT-Bewegung (Lesben, Schwule, Bi, Trans) in Brasilien.

Seine Habilitation untersucht die Herausbildung neuer Formen von Wissen und sozialer Praxis an der Schnittstelle von Grenzpolitik, Menschenrechtsdiskurs, Aktivismus und Alltagserfahrungen bezüglich migrantischer Transpersonen in Europa.
